Final Synthesis Essay
Suppose someone lives in a society where he (or she) is led by a person who has too much power for the good of everybody else. If the citizen notices the wrongdoings of the leader, how is he going to act? What if that person is not aware that the leader is abusing the power that he (or she) possesses, how will he act now? In situations like this, people will either turn against the leader, leave the location that leader is located, or simply conform to the rules of the leader out of ignorance or fear.
In Nothing to Envy, Barbara Demick uses the negative connotation in Jun-sang's internal monologue to express how in situations where a ruler has too much power, people may be forced to conform to the leader’s ways in order to ensure their own survival. Following the death of Kim Il-sung, who had been viewed as a god and a great leader to the North Koreans, Jun-sang noticed that he wasn't as grief-stricken as the other citizens surrounding him. This knowledge made him realize, "his entire future depended on his ability to cry…. It was a matter of life and death (Demick 98).” Due to Kim Il-sung’s rise in power and position over the citizens of North Korea he became a man that everybody admired and sought to be like. As a result, his death devastated the whole nation, and so when Jun-sang realized that he was not as upset as he felt he was supposed to be, he realized that if he were to be spotted by anybody else in the crowd, he would most likely be turned over to the authorities and probably held as a traitor to Kim Il-sung, and North Korea by extension. This realization made him scared for his life. As time ticked by Jun-sang grew more and more afraid for his life. Out of desperation, Jun-sang forced himself to cry, "he felt himself falling to his knees, rocking back and forth, sobbing just like everyone else. Nobody would be the wiser (Demick 99).” In order to not stand out from the rest of the citizens and to keep from getting into trouble, Jun-sang forced himself to cry. Even though Jun-sang wasn't entirely upset over the death of Kim Il-sung, he knew that the only way he was going to keep living the privileged life he had always had was to blend in and cry like everybody else. Jun-sang forcing himself to cry in order to blend in with the group shows how people can be influenced to assent to the rules of a powerful ruler to secure their chances of survival.
In In the Time of the Butterflies, the word choice chosen by Julia Alvarez shows just how far some people will go in response to a leader with too much power. While living with Minerva and her husband, Maria Teresa (Mate) answers the door to a stranger with a box and upon opening the box finds what she refers to as "enough guns to start a revolution." (Alvarez 142) In the morning, Mate confronts Minerva about the box, later journalizing that, "Manolo and Minerva have explained everything. A national underground is forming (Alvarez 142).” In response to Rafael Trujillo’s abuse of power as the country’s president, many citizens of the Dominican Republic had been secretly gathering underground to overthrow him. The words that Alvarez used in this sentence, and the format of the sentence itself, give it a sort of nonchalance tone, as if the formation of a rebellion is not anything serious, which therefore draws more attention to the sentence. Not many are brave enough to join a rebellion, and the fact that Minerva is a part of it shows the extent that she is willing to go to in order to put an end to Trujillo's abuse of power. Alvarez's word choice is especially effective in the code words that Mate is taught, showing the resolve of the rebellion members. Among the code words that Manolo and Minerva teach Mate, she learned the phrase meaning, "The goat must die for us to eat at the picnic (Alvarez 142).” The goat in this case refers to Trujillo and the members of the rebellion are planning to kill him, meaning people don't just want to overthrow him, they want him dead so that there's no possible way for him to retaliate. Trujillo had abused the amount of power he had over the citizens in the Dominican Republic so much that the people who are willing to stand up to him believe the only way for their country to achieve freedom (the picnic) is through Trujillo’s assassination. Julia Alvarez's use of the word "must" signifies and intensifies the necessity the members of the rebellion feel to end Trujillo's life, and shows just how far some people will go to get rid of a power-abusing leader.
In The Patriot directed by Roland Emmerich, the use of dialogue and action scenes show that if people are given enough reason, they will stand up to those who are power-abusive and fight for their freedom and what they believe in. In the beginning of the film, there is a gathering of the Southern Carolina General Assembly in Charleston to vote on a levy supporting the Continental Army, during which one of the members, Mr. Howard exclaimed, “We are citizens of an American nation! And our rights are being threatened by a tyrant three thousand miles away (The Patriot, Emmerich)!” Many colonists did not like the new rules imposed by King George III, and so with only a little bit more encouragement from Mr. Howard, they voted in favor of the levy. The colonists’ desire to be free from King George’s tyrannical ruling and their annoyance of how George III was abusing his power as king, caused many of them to join the fight against the British and those that couldn’t, to find other means to support the fighters. Much later in the movie, Colonel William Tavington of the British Army, abused his power as a military member and evoked the anger of many colonists. After receiving all of the information that he needed on the whereabouts of Benjamin Martin and his militia members, Tavington locked a group of townspeople in a church, and when loyalist Captain James Wilkins protested against Tavington’s intentions to burn the church, Tavington replied, “Didn’t you say all those who stand against England deserve to die a traitor’s death? Burn the church Captain (The Patriot, Emmerich).” As a Royal Army member, Tavington assumed he had the power to deal with citizens however he pleased, and with this assumption, became harsh to colonist civilians, often hurting or killing them. His act of brutality in this particular town, however, caused the militia members to retaliate, killing many of his men, although Tavington himself survived. Benjamin Martin despised Tavington for his cruelness, which ended in two of his sons dying, and during a later battle Benjamin ended up killing Tavington to avenge his sons and the others that had also been killed. Tavington’s eagerness to exert unnecessary power pushed the colonists to their limits and ultimately ended in Tavington’s death, showing that if a person abuses his power to the extent that he is continuously hurting others, the victims will strike back against the leader.
One of the biggest issues plaguing the world today is the matter concerning the terrorist group ISIS. ISIS has terrorized people from all places over the world and for the most part, nobody's done anything in retaliation-- that is until the King of Jordan did, proving that if people are pushed to their limits, they will strike back at people who abuse power. In response to ISIS burning a Jordanian pilot alive, the Jordan King used the Jordanian Armed Forces to retaliate, after which Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh proclaimed, "'...We're going after them wherever they are, with everything that we have… and it's certainly not the end (Botelho, Karadsheh).'" When ISIS struck too close to home, the people of Jordan decided that they could no longer just sit back and watch. Before the burning of the Jordan pilot, Jordan didn't appear to have tried too hard to do anything in response to the terror that ISIS was causing. The killing of the pilot forced Jordan to truly see all the horrors that ISIS was unleashing onto the world, and forced them to finally be willing enough to strike back against ISIS. In a Fox News article about the same topic, US President Barack Obama met with Jordan King Abdullah II. In the meeting, Obama remarks, "'It's just one more indication of the viciousness and barbarity of this organization...(Herridge, Sarsour).'” The death of the Jordanian pilot has caused anger to rise not just among the citizens of Jordan, but in other countries throughout the world. Seeing how truly inhumane ISIS could be has resulted in a necessity that people felt towards actually trying to do something to put an end to all of the terrorizating, demonstrating that as long as there are power-abusing people in the world, there will always be people who stand up to them even while others do nothing.
As a youth I have yet to truly experience all that this world has to offer, but as a student who still goes to school, I have learned enough to know that the pattern I have observed in the previous paragraphs can still be seen in school, only in a less graphic manner. Although the school environment does not give students any actual power over each other, and thus prevents them from becoming power-abusive, some high school students are the sort to find a loophole in such situations. Despite the fact that I have not personally seen anybody bullied or have been bullied myself, bullying is a situation where one person or more think themselves better than another and therefore use their self-proclaimed authority over that person and make his life horrible. In bullying cases, the victim might just go along with what the bully is doing, retaliate against the bully, and in rare cases transfer schools. The responses to bullying has presented me with another response to someone abusing their power over others, suicide, which is thankfully not nearly as common as the other responses.
Time and time again, it has been shown that whenever someone in power starts to abuse those powers, things turn ugly. Some situations end more peacefully than others, and depending on the people being led by the leader the responses to the “power-abusiveness” differs.
In history, books, movies, and today’s society a pattern can be seen that shows that whenever humans are in a situation where they are being ruled by a person with too much power, they will either turn against the leader, leave the location the leader is at, consent to the leader’s ways out of ignorance or fear, or rarely just commit suicide.
